Emperor Claudius II was remembered as a cruel ruler throughout his reign for dragging Rome into a fight that cost many lives. Claudius II was an ambitious and ruthless ruler who wanted Rome to constantly win the wars. As a result, the emperor appointed his most powerful men to step down. Because of that, Claudius II forbade his soldiers from having marriage relations or commitments at the time.

Saint Valentine was enraged and spoke out against it when heard about the ban. In Rome, at the time, Saint Valentine secretly married young couples. However, his clandestine activities were discovered by the empire, and then he was arrested. He had to endure a beating till he was beheaded and the punishment he received was no joke.
