A Guest Lecture of 3 in 1 Program ‘Creative Writing’: Introduction to Poetry – Exploring Ideas and Using Figurative Language

Study Program of English Literature, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held a guest lecture with the theme Introduction to Poetry – Exploring Ideas and Using Figurative Language on Saturday (10/24/2020). The event was hosted by Aris Siswanti, M.Pd., as the moderator and attended by Creative Writing lecturers. The participants who attended the guest lecture included approximately 40 students in their 5th semester who took Creative Writing courses, and it was conducted online through the Zoom platform.

The speaker who presented the Poetry Writing guest lecture was Assoc. Prof. John Ryan, a lecturer at Southern Cross University and Notre Dame University in Australia. He is an expert in the field of writing and has a lot of experience in composing poetry and writing novels.

John Ryan opened up the presentation by explaining the importance of literature. To brighten the interaction, he asked the students some questions about poetry. John Ryan also shared what has inspired him to write poetry such as some of the Australian paintings.

After delivering the material, the class was continued by a question-and-answer session. John Ryan also gave an assignment to the students in the form of class journals.

The Poetry Writing guest lecture was aimed to give the students a lot of inspiration and be able to use figurative language well. [ASR/DSM/DTS/MSH/PR FCS]
