“Idrek for Humanity: Screen Capturing Malang” : Discussing Malang City as a Place for Literary Works

A literary work commonly uses a city as the setting of the place where a story begins. The city chosen for it typically has its own sense of literary work. This is in accordance with the fact that Malang city is normally selected to be the setting of several literary works. That was the topic discussed in “Idrek for Humanity: Screen Capturing Malang” via online discussion held on 2 October 2021 by Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) that invited three speakers from universities that place in Malang. They are Wawan Eko Yulianto, Ph.D. from Universitas Ma Chung, Nurenzia Yannuar, Ph.D. from UM, and Ika Nurhayani, Ph.D., a lecture from the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya.

The discussion begins with a creative writing activity that uses a certain city as the setting of the story. This activity was elivered by Wawan Eko Yulianto. According to him, this activity could gain the value of the story itself and also for the city. Several literary works applied Malang as the setting of place such as Lemah Tanjung by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim, Pengalamanku di Daerah Pertempuran Malang Selatan by R.T. Djajadiningrat, Aloer-Aloer Merah by Ardi Wina Saputra, Tamu Kota Seoul by Yusri Fajar who is one of English Literature lectures in Brawijaya University. Even though the title and focus of that literary work is Seoul city, he delivered that “Dibagian awal, kita melihat titik berangkatnya adalah dari Malang” which translated “we would see Malang is the point of the story begin in the beginning part”.

She said that the existence of the Walikan language as grown due to the common use in platforms such as in Yowis Ben film where use Malang as the setting of place and a song with title Uklam-Uklam from Tani Maju & HS12.
