FCS UB, Malang – Behind America’s technological greatness, it turns out that there is a community in the country that opposes technology’s presence in their life.
That community is the Amish, a group of people in America who have retained their ancestors’ way of life that is far from modernization and stay life as living in the 19th century until the era of digital nowadays.
The Amish occupied the North of America. They are people who choose the religious group that originated from Swiss Anabaptists. This community is a Protestant Christian splinter group. In the 18th century, the Amish came from mainland Europe to North America with the purpose to gain liberty and pray with their faith peacefully.
The Amish follow a set of rules that they refer to as Ordnung. There are slight differences during the application of that rule which is in each Amish community around the United States since those communities exist are motley. It is related to the things that are acceptable in one community may not be permissible in another. For instance, how to dress, whether or not to utilize technology, and the regulations for dealing with non-Amish people, all of those must be considered.
While others desire to catch up with following the trends and use cutting-edge technology, the Amish people maintain a style that is reminiscent of medieval America. They are accustomed to wearing muted, non-flashy colors. There is a tribe named Baduy tribe in Indonesia, the people wear their own attire, which is simple to wear.
Amish women typically wear white hats with straps as their thew, while Amish men typically wear tall black hats. The hair of the Amish woman is wrapped up in a high bun like a ponytail, while the man is a short haircut with a beard that hangs down like President Abraham Lincoln’s as their hairstyles.
The Amish residential village is also kept clean and affluent due to the people’s hard work and the ability to execute a variety of tasks. They are able to do farming, gardening, woodworking, create furniture, cake makers, handicrafts, and tourism.
Amish people tightly hold religious ideas in their daily lives, believing that by doing so, they will live on a straight path. They are honest, uncomplicated, pleasant, and untouched by current advances of modernism, ensuring that their predecessors’ cultural values are preserved today. They believe that people are becoming increasingly disengaged from religion in modern times. They believe that current times lead to hedonism with the thought about temporal happiness and worldly pleasure, individualism by acting selfish towards others, and atheism with skepticism to God’s existence, those happened in many people.
