Study Program of English Literature, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS), Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held a Webinar Series 4 of Student Interests and Talent Assistance through Zoom media on Saturday (11/14/2020) at 11 p.m. was included 45 participants. The theme of the event was “The Art of Story Telling: Designing Storyboards for Comics”. This webinar invited Aji Prasetyo as the speaker, and Scarlentina Vidyayani, M.Hum., as the moderator.
Aji is a well-known comic artist. He has won many awards, such as the 3rd winner of the 2013 Indonesian Comic Competition, the Best Short Comic Category Winner, and the Winner at the 2016 Kosasih Award. Aji Setiadi is also a Founder of the Tjangkir 13 Rembug Community Forum and Compiler of the Proclamation History Comic.
Aji delivered material about writing literary stories in a comic form by using storyboards. He explained the techniques used in making storyboards such as (1) there must be more than one image in a comic, which is a time sequence, (2) comics require a minimum of two panels like a comic strip, (3) the placement of the dialogue’s reading direction, such as from left to right or from top to bottom, (4) how to adjust the space between text and image using the distance between the word balloons and the writing is not too tight by considering the length of the dialog for each panel, and (5) the dialogue in one panel can be divided into several word balloons.
Aji also conveyed the function of separating scenes in comics, modeling as an introduction to location situations in comics, also the terms bird few and frog views in comics’ shooting effect. “Don’t be afraid to start working and be brave to start because there is no immediately famous work. Later, when we see the work, we previously worked on and think that the work is bad, it means that we have progressed for the better,” said Aji.
After Aji delivering his material, the moderator opened a question-and-answer session and also a quiz for the participants. There were five winners of this quiz who et door prizes. After the announcement of the winners, the moderators closed the event at 1 p.m. [DAF/ASR/DTS/MSH/Humas FIB]
