A Guest Lecture on Linguistics from Universitas Udayana


Faculty of Cultural Studies Brawijaya University held a seminar with Linguistics as its topics on Friday (03/06/2020) at 1 p.m. at the Hall of Building A FCS UB. There were two speakers of the seminar, both of them came from Universitas Udayana (UNUD). They were Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Suparwa, M.Hum., and Prof. Dr. I Nengah Sudipa, M.A. There were two topics in this seminar, Semantics, and Linguistics in language learning and Linguistics in language learning.

The seminar was presided by Dr. Widya Caterine Perdhani, M.pd., as a moderator. The first session was a presentation from Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Suparwa, M.Hum., regarding the Semantics topic. He discussed Semantic Analysis, followed by an explanation of Metalanguage in Semantics, with instances in local languages such as Bahasa Jawa (Javanese) and Bahasa Bali (Balinese). followed by question-and-answer session.

Next session, the event was continued by Prof. Dr. I Nengah Sudipa, M. A., presented about Linguistics in language learning. He highlighted the need for a country to develop an institution that acts as a filter and validator of descriptive linguistic ideas before they are transformed into prescriptive linguistic theories. A question-and-answer session about linguistic language learning concluded the second session.

After the presentation on those two themes, the seminar proceeded on to the socialization of UB and UNUD’s relationship in an educational program for magister and doctoral degrees. On that occasion, UNUD’s representative explained about the vision and mission of the FCS UNUD and also the courses in the magister and doctoral degree.

At the end of the seminar, the FCS UNUD’s representative gave some presents, which were books related to Linguistics, to the Head of Study Program of English Literature FCS UB, Isti Purwaningtyas, M.Pd.
