Training on the Use of Webquest to Support Online Learning at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang

The lecturers and students of the Faculty of Cultural Studies Brawijaya University have carried out a Community Service activity entitled “The Use of Webquest to Support Online Learning at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang”. This activity was divided into two series: a training held on Tuesday (7/14/2020) and a workshop was held from July to August 2020.

Initially, this Community Service activity was entitled The Use of Webquest to Support English Language Learning at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang”. However, due to the school’s great enthusiasm, the Webquest training was extended not just to English teachers, but also to all teachers and the principal of SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang. There are a total of 21 participants.

One of the community service FCS UB specialized teams, Yuni Astuti, M.Pd., and Istiqomah Wulandari, M.Ed., carried out this activity. Not only the lecturers, but also the students, Desy Catur Karinatasa and Siti Lilik Nurchalifah, took part in this exercise.

Yuni, a lecturer in the FCS UB Study Program of English Literature, said that the lecturers aimed to help equip teachers at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang with knowledge and hands-on experience with Webquest as an online learning tool. This activity is also in line with the school’s vision and goal, which emphasizes the use of technology to aid in the digital teaching process. Yuni further confessed that this action was carried out due to the pandemic, which required online teaching and learning activities, demanding the usage of skilled supporting media.

As a result, Webquest was chosen as the medium. Webquest was also picked because of its various benefits, including its public accessibility and ability to teach students to be more self-sufficient. Webquest is an instructional design methodology or framework that can be used to create effective web-based learning activities. It includes a variety of tasks, including subject introduction, assignments, and evaluation.

Yuni also admitted that the planning for this event took three months, from May to July 2020. Observation and coordination with the school were part of this preparation. This action encountered a number of difficulties along the way. One of them was the switch from online to offline of the program. This activity was planned to be done online, however the school requested that it be done offline in accordance with the school’s health protocols.

“We have prepared the concepts and materials online, but the school asked us to come directly to the school (offline). Incidentally, the pandemic at that time was still in the new normal stage, so we could do it offline adhere to the health protocols,” said Yuni.

Yuni and her team were able to successfully overcome these challenges. Yuni also mentioned that she was excited to participate in this Community Service project due of the school’s enthusiasm.
